Curvd Aire is an ensemble of professional musicians with a remarkable history of experience, education and musical talent, including current and former members of many of the most prestigious musical organizations in the Sacramento region. The members of Curvd Aire have extensive experience and training in classical and commercial music, and have performed and recorded music in all genres.

This diversity of skills and experience enable Curvd Aire to provide exactly the kinds of music you need for any occasion.
In addition to the brass quintet, Curvd Aire can also provide soloists, chamber groups, or large ensembles, according to your needs and budget.
We specialize in weddings, concerts and recitals, parties, services, graduations, holidays, and other special events. Curvd Aire performs alone or as guest artist(s) with other ensembles.

With members of the Camellia, Auburn, Sutter and CSUS Symphonies as well as numerous brass and woodwind ensembles, this fine ensemble is made up of brass and woodwind musicians with keyboards and other vocalists and instrumentalists available on request. The members of Curvd Aire have extensive experience and training in classical and commercial music, and have performed and recorded music in all genres. Most have music degrees, and all play with great skill and elan.

The Curvd Aire Brass Quintet is:

Paul Simmons, Trumpet
Paul earned his B.M. at the University of Delaware, and his M.M. at CSU, Sacramento and has studied with Gary Dilworth, David Blackinton, Richard Solis, Gilbert Johnson, Tony Crapis and Robert Goodman. Paul has been a member of the Camellia, Sutter, and CSUS Symphonies, the Newcastle Brass, California Brass and Christiana Horns. He has performed and/or recorded with ensembles from Philadelphia to Las Vegas including Daimon, East Coast Connection, the Big Band Express and Stone Gumbo, playing musical styles from traditional jazz to hard rock.

Steve Miller, Trumpet
Steve has studied composition and trumpet at the Oberlin Conservatory and CSU Sacramento. He has studied with Bernard Adelstein of the Cleveland Orchestra, John Beer at the University of Iowa, and Gary Dilworth at CSU Sacramento. He is now also studying composition at CSUS. He has played principal trumpet with the Cedar Rapids (Iowa) Symphony, the Sierra Nevada Wind Orchestra, the CSUS Symphonic Wind Ensemble and the Auburn Symphony.

Catherine Young, Horn
Born in Mesa, AZ, Catherine has studied with William Scharnberg and Pete Nowlen, among others. Her professional music career began playing ukelele on the corner at age 8; she began horn studies in the public schools at age 10. She toured China with the Oklahoma Youth Orchestra and earned her BA at Chadron State College (Nebraska). In addition to Curvd Aire, Catherine plays with the Camellia and CSUS Symphony Orchestras and the Liberace Quintet. She has performed Schumann’s Konzertstukke at CSU, Sacramento where she is pursuing her masters degree.

Larry Tyrell, Trombone
Larry earned his BM at the University of Pacific and his MA at CSU Sacramento. He has been a public school teacher for 27 years and is a member of the Auburn Symphony and played with the Sacramento Symphony before its unfortunate demise. Larry has played with the 561st Air National Guard Band and the 59th Army Band for a combined total of 21 years. His other playing experiences include the Music Circus, Ice Follies, California Wind Orchestra, and other freelance performance in Sacramento.

Donna Pool, Tuba (aka Nigurski, after the Chicago Bears football star)
Born in Albuquerque, NM, Donna grew up in Santa Rosa, CA. She began performing as a dancer, soon graduating to “lead cymbal” player in 11th grade, and switching to tuba two weeks later. Seeking good stories to tell her grandchildren, she earned a BM in Tuba. (Donna has no children to date, nor does her tuba, “Guido”). She has played tuba with countless brass quintets, bands and orchestras. Highlights include playing for Gorbachev and for her best friend’s kindergarten class. Donna teaches art and music in the San Juan school district and also enjoys traveling, cooking, gardening and baseball. She hopes to attend a game at every major league baseball park.
