Audition Information

Spring 2008 Auditions will be held April 28 at Sutter Middle School

In order to maintain and improve the qualilty of the CSO, membership in the symphony requires an audition.

These auditions consist of about 5-10 minutes of playing, and will include the musician's choice of the following:

• One or two orchestral excerpts to be chosen by the candidate from a list or from the standard orchestral repertoire, and
• One or more sections of a concerto, sonata, or other piece of your choice.

The works you choose must display technique, musicality, tone and musical understanding. The auditioner will also be asked to play one or more scales.

In addition, there will be a short informal discussion of your experience, stability, and interest in playing with Camellia.

There are several ways and times to audition for the orchestra:

At any time during the season, if you are interested in joining the orchestra, and if there is an opening, you may request a brief audition to become part of the orchestra on an interim basis. This will typically be with with the music director, personnel manager, section principal, etc. In most cases, mid-year auditions will merely qualify you to play with the orchestra, but will not gain you a specific seat. Typically, midyear additions will be seated in the last chair of the section - this may be changed at the discretion of the music director, and if it is clearly necessary for the orchestra.The CSO holds official auditions at the beginning and end of each season:

In the Spring (usually within a month after our last subscription concert)
At this time we audition those who joined during the season on an interim basis, in order to complete the seating process within the sections. We also audition individuals who are interested in open principal positions. Principal positions include:
1st violin (concertmaster), 2nd violin, viola, cello, bass, piccolo, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, French horn, trombone, tuba, and percussion.

In the Fall (Usually less than one month before our first rehearsal for the first subscription concert).
At this time we audition any musicians who wish to join the orchestra, and current members who are interested in improving their position within the section. In unusual cases we will audition for a principal chair at this time.
